Coal Creek Golf Resort a été construit sur un terrain qui autrefois était une mine de charbon à ciel ouvert. Au moment de fermer la mine, les propriétaires devaient retourner le terrain à l'état naturel. Ils ont opté pour un terrain de golf, ouvert en juin dernier. Il s'agit d'un superbe 18 trous à nul autre pareil. L'eau entre en jeu sur 12 des 18 trous et les trappes de sable noir (pour faire le lien avec l'ancienne mine de charbon) vont surement testé les joueurs de toute habilité. Coal Creek est situé à environ une heure quinze au sud-est d'Edmonton.

Coal Creek Golf Resort is a magnificent golf course which just opened recently. It was seven years in the making but has become an instant favorite of local golfers and will, no doubt, attract people from afar. My friend Daryl Hitchcock would most likely enjoy this course as much as he did Palouse Ridge which we played together a while back. The course was built over the old Dodds Coal Mine whose land needed to be reclaimed. The bold layout incorporates evidence of its mining past, such as the old tipple pictured here, on many of its fairways.

In order to maintain a further link with its mining history, the owners have opted for black sand to fill the greenside as well as fairway and waste bunkers. The effect is simply spectacular. Many of the fairway bunkers are still under construction and when hit at this time one is granted relief, but such is not the case for greenside bunkers which have been completed and are in play. My companions who ended up in those bunkers told me that this sand is heavier than what we are used to and therefore more difficult to play, perhaps because of the recent rain. I took their word for it!

Aujourd'hui, Brenda et moi avons eu le plaisir de jouer avec une amie de longue date, Jan McMillan. Jan est une avide golfeuse et c'est elle qui nous a fait découvrir ce superbe terrain de golf. Nous avons passé une très belle journée sous ce grand ciel bleu de l'Alberta. Notre score n'a pas été aussi brillant mais c'est sans importance quand on se trouve en aussi agréable compagnie. La faune s'est faite plutôt rare en ce jour mais comment ignorer une aussi belle coccinelle!
